How Bazaar!

Oceanport First Aiders hosting holiday fun Saturday.
By Greg Kulaga December 10, 2011
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, the Oceanport First Aid and Rescue Squad are inviting everybody down to the station at 2 Pemberton Avenue for a Holiday Bazaar not to be missed.
The annual event is the volunteer organization's biggest fundraiser every year, and Second Lieutentant Maggie Lippolis hopes this year will be no different.
"It's a nice hometown thing and it's been going on for many years," said Lippolis. "We depend so much on this as a fundraiser to keep going."
The squad kitchen will make a breakfast sandwich for anyone who arrives at 9, and they'll serve up hot dogs and hamburgers around lunchtime.
The big event of the day is a 50/50 chance auction. The First Aiders will also be selling Christmas trees, grave blankets and wreaths throughout the day, and local crafters will have tables set up.
Lippolis said only 300 trees are up for sale this year, down from 400, as people's tastes change and some prefer artificial trees. Capt. Connor from the squad went to a farm in Pennsylvania to pick the trees up, and the local Boy Scouts helped offload them once they arrived in Oceanport.

Oceanport Cub Scout Pack 58 Earn Ready Man Badge

Scouts practice the Heimlich manuever on each other.
Adrienne Petrillo • Fri, Nov 25, 2011Oceanport: This past week, the Webelos of Pack 58 geared up and headed over to the Oceanport First Aid building to earn their Ready Man Badge. According to Den Leader Colleen Smith, “The Ready Man Badge prepares cubs for being out in the wilderness and equips them with necessary knowledge for an emergency. They learned the basics, on a ten year old level, which is appropriate.”
In order to earn this badge, the Webelos had to participate in staged incidents. Smith shared what the Webelos were required to do. “The scouts learned who to call in an emergency, what to do when someone is choking, or if a person stops breathing during a stroke or heart attack, and how to properly bandage cuts.”
Before the Webelos were able to complete these tasks, Oceanport First Aid Volunteer members Christopher Petrillo and Carol Connor gave the Webelos a tour of the ambulances. It was on this tour that they learned about the equipment used during a first aid call and its proper purpose and usage.
Webelo member Collin McElroy was asked what he thought about the overall experience “I thought it was very cool because they had all the stuff the first aiders would use. And we got to go in the back of the truck.”
After the tour concluded, 13 Webelos headed upstairs to a classroom where they learned about different scenarios one would experience as a volunteer member of the first aid squad. Webelo McElroy had a difficult time pinpointing his favorite part of the experience, but finally answered with, “probably when we had to pretend to do the Heimlich on each other. It was a lot of fun!”
When all was said and done Smith remarked, “This one was of the best trips. We all love when we can learn, see, touch, feel and do. What a great way to learn!”

Oceanport First Aid is on the web!
Hello Residents, a quick note from the Oceanport First Aid Squad-
It has been a busy year; starting with blizzards and snow storms, continuing with hurricanes and other severe weather. The Squad has been on call through them all. To date over 400 calls for assistance have been answered by the First Aid Squad. During Hurricane Irene we worked tirelessly, in conjunction with the Fire Department, to answer calls in the heart of the storm to ensure the safety of Borough residents. We continue to stand ready to respond in any emergency.
We would like to thank the community for their support of the First Aid Squad by attending the Coles Brother’s Circus held on Monmouth Park during August. Your attendance made the event a great success and we hope all who attended had fun. A special thank you goes out to Mayor Mahon, Councilman Gallo and Borough Clerk Jungfer for their support of the circus. The first aid kits sold at the Summer’s End Festival are still on sale for those that weren’t able to purchase one. These kits are a must have around the car and home. To place an order, please send an email to: oceanportfas@gmail.com. As a reminder, Christmas trees, wreaths and grave blankets are sold behind the Squad building from Thanksgiving until Christmas, shop early for the best selection. Stay tuned for information on the annual holiday bazaar and gift auction.
We are pleased to announce the launching of our website and Facebook page. Please visit www.oceanportfirstaid.org for information on the squad and the many benefits of volunteering. Hurricane Irene Commendation
A MESSAGE FROM OCEANPORT MAYOR MICHAEL MAHON:
Thank you Oceanport Residents, volunteers, professionals, and the Office of Emergency Management. Whether it was following the preplan and moving your cars and boats to the high ground; evacuating when asked; and heading warnings and information throughout the storm; Oceanport Residents were exceptional.
Kudos to the Oceanport Public Works and Police Departments for braving hazardous conditions to keep our town safe.
Hats off to our volunteer fire fighters and first aider's for taking time away from their families and homes during extreme conditions to respond to calls throughout our town.
A special thanks to the Oceanport Office of Emergency Management and CERT Team for facilitating and coordinating efficient production throughout Hurricane Irene, establishing shelters, evacuating seniors, organizing transportation, and coordinating communications between local and neighboring resources.
Thanks to the Borough Administrator and members of the governing body for providing support where needed, managing public information through social media, the borough website, and responding to concerns made through Hurricane Irene email, facebook, and twitter.
Special mention and thanks to Buzz Baldanza, Oceanport Emergency Management Coordinator. Job well done.
In the coming days we would like your feedback on where we can do better and where we did well. Thanks again for your continued support.

Oceanport First Aid helps families find their way during emergencies.

Do you know how to find your way to the area hospitals? Often times the First Aid Squad is confronted with family members of patients who can not find their way to the hospital. Following behind the ambulance is not an option due to the risks it brings to the ambulance, family member and motoring public. Instead, the Oceanport First Aid has published a tri-fold brochure it can hand to family members to assist them. The brochure starts with the main thoroughfares in town and directs them to the appropriate facility with detailed turn by turn directions. For vehicles equipped with navigation systems the addresses are also provided along with phone numbers should they get lost. The first section of the brochure outlines a few tips for the drivers to keep in mind, mainly to avoid distracted driving (phone calls, text messaging, etc) and to obey normal traffic laws.
